We’ve spent $ 107K to have twins with a replacement in Cyprus – now the country will not let us leave

A gay couple spent $ 107,000 to have twins in Cyprus through Surrogate, but are now stuck in the country.

Damian, 33, and Pasan Fernando, 36, had always dreamed of starting a family and began their journey six years ago.

The Coupleifi tried to find a replacement in the UK and decided to look instead of their options abroad.

Through a recommendation they found the baby’s world center, Cyprus.

Pasan’s sperm was used to fertilize a donor’s eggs – which they chose to fit better with Damian’s features – before the couple was paired with a substitute.

They found that their substitute was pregnant with twins in April 2024 and flew to Kirus on New Year’s Eve ready for birth.

River and Liko were born on January 3, 2025 but parents have not been able to take them home to St albans, Hertfordshire for the past eight weeks.

They applied for their passports on January 13, 2025 – when they had all the required documents – but say their application is still waiting to be reviewed after some documents were cheated.

Damian, a math leader, said: “This issue of passport is incredibly disappointing.

“Grabs without human meaning.

“It is so avoidable.

“Children are unable to meet their grandparents.”

Damian and Pasan, an assistant chairman, met in 2014 and tied the knot in 2017.

The two wanted to start a family and began looking at Surrogac in the UK six years ago.

In the United Kingdom, according to the law of Surrogac, the substitute must be the one who should start contacts with the target parents.

Damian said: “We joined some organizations and groups on Facebook.

“We did a lot of society.”

Pasan added: “We had an online journal so that a substitute can see how we are like.”

But after years trying to find a couple match did not receive a surrogate offer.

At that time they were able to save so that in September 2023 they were able to consider going abroad for Surrogac.

The Coupleifti had a recommendation for the Cyprus -based Baby Center and had a call with the agency in October 2023.

They flew outside in December to deposit the samples and decided that they would use the rich sperm and an egg donor that resembled Damian.

Pasan said: “It was important as it was my DNA that we wanted to look closer to Damian’s features.”

They chose an egg donor in January 2024 and fertilized their eggs in the same month.

After being left with three healthy embryos, they were then able to choose a substitute connected through the clinic in March 2023.

They found that they were pregnant with twins in April 2023.

Pasan said, “It was quite surreal.”

The Coupleifi decided not to have contact with their substitute until birth as they did not want to make it “unpleasant” for it.

Pasan said: “The clinic – every three weeks they would send us a scan.”

Their surrogate was set for a section C planned on January 3, 2025 and the couple flew outside on New Year’s Eve.

They were in the room next door, when the babies were born and two hours later they met for the first time.

Damian said: “It was a magical moment.

“They wanted to keep the river a little longer just to make sure he was breathing in order.

“Liko looks like a paste.

“The river looks a lot like me.”

Pasan added: “They just said” here is your child. “

“We thought” how do we keep a baby? “‘How do we feed a baby?’

“We’re learning very quickly.”

They have received some emails claiming that some documents were lost – but they were rejected in the old request or in other Gemini application. Pasan Fernando / SWN

Coupleifi wanted to return to the UK as soon as possible. Pasan was given a year of vacation and Damian was kindly given the first half of this school year vacation.

They had previously instructed a lawyer and had collected all the documents they would have to apply for Gemini passports.

After receiving birth certificates, they were able to send a request on January 13, 2025 and heard again on January 21 that they were accepted.

But in January, 31 Passport Office requested new applications due to a confusion of where the passports would be sent.

They reappeared applications on the same day and called to confirm that the supporting documents sent already would be linked to new applications.

But the couple have now had a series of misconduct and documents that are being placed badly holding their request – and leaving them trapped in Cyprus.

Damian said: “Everyone is something.

“We call them every single day.”

They have received some emails claiming that some documents were lost – but they were rejected in the old request or in other Gemini application.

The Coupleifti have had to switch to three different Airbnb since it was there.

This is increasing additional costs as it has already strengthened $ 88,000 for the agency and $ 19,000 for lawyers and travel.

Damian said: “We were warned to prepare for disability.

“We just hope something can change.

“We don’t want this to happen to future parents.”

Coupleifti are still waiting for their applications to be reviewed and have been advised that there is no “no time limit for this complicated process”.

They have no idea when they will be able to get the passports for the Gemini to return home – which can say Damian will have to take unpaid rest.

He said: “There is a great financial element.”

Despite disappointment, the couple are trying not to affect their baby’s bubble.

They hope that their story can also be a hope for others who want to become parents.

Pasan said: “Be vigilant, there are many frauds.

“But don’t give up on hope.

“We are evidence that it is possible.”
